The Struggle of Finding Employees Who Fit

Whether it was collaboration or aligning with our core values—like customer service, innovation, or accountability—the fit just wasn’t there. It’s clear to me now that no amount of technical expertise can make up for a mismatch in culture.

Finding the perfect candidate on paper is always a challenge. Their skills, experience, and technical expertise might check all the right boxes. But more often than not, I discover that something is missing. It’s not about qualifications; it’s about how well they align with our company culture, shared values, and the ability to fit seamlessly with the team.

When Skills Aren’t Enough

I’ve hired people who were top performers in their previous roles, only to watch them struggle when they joined our team. Despite being excellent on paper, they couldn’t adapt to our way of working. Whether it was collaboration or aligning with our core values—like customer service, innovation, or accountability—the fit just wasn’t there. It’s clear to me now that no amount of technical expertise can make up for a mismatch in culture.

The Hidden Challenge in Hiring

What I’ve come to realize is that cultural fit doesn’t always show up in an interview. Candidates often present themselves perfectly, saying all the right things and impressing with their experience. But cultural fit reveals itself once they’re part of the team—when collaboration is tested, and real challenges arise that require shared values to guide decisions. That’s when the true test comes.

Making Tough Decisions

As a leader, I’ve had to make some difficult calls. Letting go of employees who were competent but didn’t align with our mission was never easy. Over time, I’ve learned that hiring isn’t just about filling a position—it’s about strengthening the team. Now, I put more emphasis on behavioral interviews, asking deeper questions about work styles and values. I also involve the team in the process because, after all, they are the ones who will be working alongside the new hire every day.

Lessons for the Future

The lesson I keep learning is that while skills can be taught, values and mindset are much harder to change. Finding the balance between expertise and cultural fit is one of hiring managers toughest challenges. But getting it right is what makes a company truly thrive. As I continue to lead, I know that focusing on both skills and cultural alignment is essential for building the strongest team possible.
